Amidst the chaos and distractions of today's fast-paced world, losing sight of our dreams and aspirations is easy. However, there is a simple yet effective tool that can help us align our focus, tap into our inner desires, and bring our goals to life. Enter the vision board – a visually captivating representation of our dreams and aspirations. Vision boards have been used by many famous and infamous people for years. Steve Harvey credits his continued success to his consistent use of vision boards. Others like Oprah Winfrey, Katy Perry, Ellen DeGeneres, Jim Carey, and Beyonce purport the power of vision boards to manifest their dreams.
I took the time this past week to create my vision board (see my masterpiece on the left). While the process was time-consuming, it forced me to dig deep into my subconscious to identify my true desires and left me feeling more authentic than I have ever felt in my life. In this blog post, we'll explore why vision boards work and why incorporating them into our lives can be a transformative practice.
"Vision boards are effective because they are a visual reminder of your intentions and shape your thoughts and actions." - Elizabeth Perry
1. Visualization and Value-tagging
At its core, a vision board is a powerful visualization tool that works in conjunction with value-tagging, a process in which our brains imprint important things into our subconscious and filter out the unnecessary. In value-tagging, the brain assigns higher values to pictures than words (like on a to-do list), and each time you look at the pictures, the value assigned gets higher and higher in importance. By creating a vision board, we engage in focused visualization, harnessing the power of our thoughts and intentions.
2. Clarity and Goal Setting
One of the most significant benefits of vision boards is their ability to provide clarity in goal setting. When we visualize our dreams and aspirations, we gain a clearer understanding of what we truly desire. Through the process of creating a vision board, we define our goals and establish a clear path and direction for our lives. This clarity empowers us to make conscious decisions and take purposeful actions that align with our visions, increasing the likelihood of success.
3. Reinforcement of Positive Beliefs
Vision boards serve as constant reminders of our abilities and potential. By prominently displaying images, affirmations, and quotes that represent our goals, we reinforce positive beliefs about ourselves and our capabilities. This reinforcement helps combat self-doubt and negativity, allowing us to stay motivated and focused. Over time, these positive beliefs become ingrained in us, fostering resilience and unwavering confidence in our abilities to achieve what we desire.
4. Visualization and Neuroplasticity
Neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to reorganize and form new neural connections, plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of vision boards. The act of visualizing our desires stimulates specific regions of our brain, enhancing the neural pathways associated with those visualizations. As a result, our brain becomes wired to seek out opportunities and solutions that align with our visions. By consistently exposing ourselves to our vision boards, we reinforce these neural connections, making it easier for us to recognize and seize opportunities that propel us forward.
5. Inspiration and Motivation
Vision boards are a source of constant inspiration and motivation. By surrounding ourselves with visual representations of our dreams, we create an environment that fosters creativity, determination, and enthusiasm. The images, quotes, and affirmations on our vision boards serve as powerful reminders of the life we strive to live. When faced with challenges or obstacles, these visual cues can reignite our motivation and remind us of the bigger picture, reinvigorating our efforts to achieve our goals.
A Word of Advice:
Vision boards are more than just collages of images; they are gateways to our dreams and aspirations. By incorporating this simple practice into our lives, we tap into the power of visualization, goal setting, positive reinforcement, and neuroplasticity. Vision boards empower us to align our thoughts, beliefs, and actions with our desires, allowing us to manifest our dreams with clarity and intention. But remember, to manifest your dreams you must take action! So, unleash your creativity, embrace the power of visualization, and let your vision board guide you toward a life filled with purpose, joy, and success.
If you are still not sure how to create a vision board, here is a step-by-step guide below.
Bear in mind, there is no wrong or right way to do this. Vision boards can be physical or digital and as simple or complex as you decide to make them.
Create Your Vision Board:
If you are making a physical board, gather supplies including magazines, pictures, pieces of cloth, scissors, glue, poster boards (cardboard works too), books, markers, and other decorative items to give your board a little razzle-dazzle. For digital boards, platforms like Milanote or Canva are great options.
Pause! Take a few minutes to think about your vision. What do you want your life to look like? Be limitless in your thoughts and try to remain self-aware. Write it down if you need to.
Using the materials you have gathered, look for pictures, quotes, or objects that represent your vision. Stick them on your board in any order you like. Remember, there is no wrong or right way to do this.
Now let your creativity shine! Add decorations such as stickers, glitter, handwritten notes, or quotes. Ensure the layout is something that will grab your attention each time. Make sure the board represents you.
Display it in a place where you will see it daily. If you made a physical board, be sure to take pictures of it. A good idea is to set it as your desktop background or your phone's screen saver.
As you achieve all the things from one board, create another, and another, and so on...the process of visualizing your dreams, then working towards achieving them, should never stop!
